I am the Victim of a Crime. Will I Know When the Offender is Released from Jail?

As a victim, you have the right to information about an offender serving either a provincial or federal sentence, including information about release dates and when they may be absent from a correctional facility.

Provincial

If the Ministry of Community Safety knows you are a victim (you filed a Victim Impact Statement, applied for compensation or were identified by police as a victim), they will inform and consult with you about various things, including:

  • when the offender is released from jail
  • authorized absences (when an offender may be released from a facility on a temporary basis for a specific reason)
  • reintegration leave (when an offender may be released to live in the community under supervision)

Federal

Correctional Service Canada considers anyone who has suffered physical or emotional harm, property damage or economic loss as the result of a crime to be a victim. Correctional Service Canada does not provide information automatically. You need to fill out an application or register online. You can also give someone else written permission to receive information for you.

Both the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Service Canada will provide information to you directly unless you have said that you do not want to be contacted or you have asked to be contacted through another person or organization (like a Victim Services Program). Information you share with Corrections about any concerns you have may be shared with the offender. However, personal information about you will not be shared.
