Consumers

Knowing your rights as a consumer can prevent things from going wrong and if things do go wrong, help you understand what you can do.

Can sellers say things that are not true to get me to buy something?

There are laws against unfair advertising. This includes things like saying something is a special deal when it is not and making false claims about a product. If a seller makes claims about a product to get you to buy it, the product must live up to these claims or you can get a refund.

Some general claims such as ‘best on the market’ or ‘marvelous price’ that are not specific do not count. Sellers do not have to sell you something for the price on the price tag. If there are two price tags sellers need to give you the lower price. These rules do not apply to private sales.

What can I do if I buy something and there are problems with it?

Even if the seller does not make any claims about a product it must live up to certain standards. The contents of a package must match the description given on the outside of the package or given on the website for an online purchase. Goods must also be of an acceptable quality and fit for their ordinary purpose. For example, paint that is labelled as ‘outdoor’ must stand up to outdoor weather.
