Only limited parts of the Indian Act about reserve land still apply if a First Nation has a Self-government Treaty.
In Saskatchewan, Whitecap Dakota First Nation has signed a Self-Government Treaty with Canada. This recognizes their Inherent Right to self-government. It recognizes their authority to enact their own laws about reserve land.
Only limited parts of the Indian Act about reserve land still apply to Whitecap Dakota First Nation reserve land. This includes the section that protects reserve land from being taken for a debt and the section that exempts it from taxation. Other First Nations may enter into this type of agreement in the future.
